Pudgiest pets compete in slimming contest

LONDON (Reuters) – Eight of Britain’s fattest pets are to embark on a 100-day diet and fitness regime in a bid to crowned this year’s pet fit club champion.

The seven dogs and one cat, who are all more than 30 percent overweight and weigh a combined total of 191 kg (30 stones), were picked by veterinary charity PDSA who are running the slimming contest.

The animals, who need to lose a total of 74 kg to reach their ideal weight, will be put on specially tailored diet and exercise programs.

The pet who achieves the biggest percentage weight loss and best follows their new regime will be crowned champion, winning their owner a pet-friendly holiday.

PDSA statistics show around 30 percent of Britain’s dogs are overweight or obese, amounting to around 1.95 million fat dogs.

“Alongside their daily portions of pet food, owners often show their affection by giving unhealthy human treats such as cheese, buttered toast and biscuits. They don’t realize they are actually killing their pets with kindness,” said Sean Wensley, a veterinary surgeon at PDSA.

No Fee, No Feline? Mad Pet Lover Wields Bat, Liberates Cat After Shelter Fee Spat

Police are looking for an irate pet lover so intent on liberating his lost cat that he wielded a bat to fend off animal shelter employees.

Dallas Animal Shelter manager Kent Robertson says the man found his missing gray and blue short-haired cat at the shelter, where it had been brought by someone who thought it was a stray.

He blew his stack when told he had to pay a $132 fee to take his cat.

Police say the man returned Monday, loaded his cat into a carrier without paying the fee, and threatened the staff with the baseball bat. No one was injured.

Most people thank shelter workers. Says Robertson: “This was pretty extreme.”

The man could be charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

Police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse says police have a clue _ the man signed the shelter guest book before fleeing.

Disabled Man filed 400 Lawsuits

November 19, 2008

LOS ANGELES — A paralyzed Woodland Hills man, who has filed more than 400 lawsuits against California businesses, can sue no more.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear the case of Molski vs. Evergreen Dynasty Corp., owner of a Chinese restaurant in Solvang, California.

The 38-year-old Polish-born Molski filed more than 400 suits under the Americans With Disabilities Act before a federal judge barred him from future litigation in 2004.

In a highly unusual action in 2004, U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie, who has since died, branded Molski a “hit-and-run plaintiff,” accusing him of systematic extortion of businesses across California.

Molski, who has used a wheelchair since a motorcycle accident two decades ago, sued restaurants, bowling alleys, wineries and other retail outlets for insufficient handicapped parking, misplaced handrails and other violations of the disabilities act.

He demanded that business owners  be fined $4,000 for every day their facilities failed to meet exacting federal standards.

Many settled out of court for fear of adverse judgments, earning Molski hundreds of thousands of dollars in less than two years.

Molski was traveling abroad and could not be reached for comment, according to a secretary at the San Francisco office of his attorney, Thomas E. Frankovich.

The Frankovich firm was also accused by Rafeedie of misusing the courts and barred from filing more suits without the judge’s permission.

Postal Worker Charged with Smoking Crack
By Nick Iannelli

A postal worker from Milwaukee is accused of smoking crack cocaine in her mail truck and delivering the drug to her adult daughter.

Milwaukee Police officers working with U.S. postal inspectors followed Sandra Lee Winkler on her mail route where they documented several illegal activities.

According to the criminal complaint, authorities outside Winkler’s house witnessed her park her delivery truck outside before making a suspicious transaction with an unknown individual inside her home.

Following that incident, Winkler got back into her truck and drove to the 1500 block of S. 28th Street where she met her adult daughter and handed her a substance which authorities later identified as crack cocaine.

Authorities continued tracking  Winkler as she traveled to 3818 W. Mitchell street where Winkler got out of the mail truck and sat in the vehicle’s cargo area.

The complaint then states “A postal inspector went up to the truck and opened the rear door, which revealed the defendant [Winkler] sitting inside the cargo area in the process of smoking crack cocaine.”

Winkler has admitted that she has used crack cocaine “daily for a couple of years.”  She now faces a felony count of delivery of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.

If convicted of the felony charge, Winkler could face up to ten years in prison

Brazilian stock trader shoots himself on trading floor

A stock exchange trader has shot himself in the chest on the trading floor of Sao Paulo’s Bovespa stock exchange a couple of hours prior to the markets closing. The victim identified as Paolo Sergio Silva, aged 36, was taken to hospital and his current condition is unclear.
Initial investigations suggest that the man had traded heavily in stocks that had plummeted on the Brazilian Stock Exchange and this may have been the trigger for the shooting. Brazil has seen dramatic falls in its share market recently although the Brazilian economy is not believed to be in recession yet.
The stock exchange closed temporarily following the incident and terrified workers were seen fleeing the trading floor assuming a terrorist attack was taking place or a gang was taking control of the stock exchange for financial gain.
Rita Mendoza who works as an assistant on the floor witnessed the event and commented ‘I thought a robbery was occurring then I saw blood on a table and a man on the floor, I assumed that the robbers had fled, only much later was I informed that a co-worker had inflicted this on himself. I am not surprised as many here are under some stress as a result of the worldwide financial crisis.

Astronaut Tool Bag Lost In Space

Nov 19

Posted: under people.

An astronaut fixing the outside of the international space station has dropped a tool bag, which then floated away.

The spacewalker let go of the bag by accident when a grease gun inside it exploded.

It is one of the largest items ever lost in space.

The mishap occurred during an unprecedented attempt to clean and lubricate a solar panel joint.

Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper was just starting to work on the joint when the proverbial spanner was placed in the space works.

She reported her grease gun exploding, which released the dark grey lubricant all over a camera and her gloves.

While wiping herself off, the white, backpack-size bag slipped out of her grip, and she watched as her entire set of tools floated off into space.

“Oh, great,” she mumbled.

Ms Stefanyshyn-Piper was one of two astronauts to have stepped outside the space station for the special mission.

Her trip with Stephen Bowen is the first of four spacewalks planned during the shuttle Endeavour’s visit.

The astronauts were lugging grease guns, putty knives and oven-like gloves to try to remove metal grit from the gummed-up joint.

For more than a year, the joint has been unable to automatically point solar wings toward the sun for maximum energy production.

The repair work is due to take up much of all four spacewalks.

Man In Wheelchair Robs Bank

‘He Miscalculated His Ability To Flee,’ Official Says

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — A wheelchair-bound man who robbed a Space Coast Credit Union branch on Merritt Island Friday afternoon was arrested minutes later, and the stolen money was found in his prosthetic leg, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said.

Merritt Island resident Christopher Reed, 45, was arrested at about 4:20 p.m., 10 minutes after the bank was robbed, according to investigators.

Investigators told Local 6 News partner Florida Today that Reed, who is a paraplegic confined to a motorized wheelchair, entered the bank on the 400 block of Fortenberry Road on Merritt Island, and demanded money after telling the employees that he was armed with an explosive device.

He left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money,” Brevard County sheriff’s Lt. Vic DeSantis said.

Minutes later, he was located near the 300 block of Plumosa Street on Merritt Island.

Reed told detectives that two unknown suspects had threatened him with a gun and forced him to commit the robbery.

Reed told deputies that the money had been given to those two men, according to the sheriff’s office.

But several witnesses from the credit union identified Reed as the culprit and he was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies later found that the money taken during the robbery was concealed in Reed’s prosthetic leg, DeSantis said.

All the money taken during the robbery was recovered, he said.

Reed faces charges of robbery, grand theft, threats to plant or use a hoax explosive device and aggravated assault.

“Certainly out of the ordinary,” DeSantis said, referring to the incident. “He appeared to have been drinking.”

A bottle of vodka also was recovered from his motorized wheelchair.

“He probably miscalculated his ability to flee the scene,” DeSantis said.

Inmate escapes German jail in box

Nov 15

Posted: under people.

A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail.

The 42-year-old Turkish citizen - who was serving a seven-year sentence - had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for the shops.

At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown.

The chief warden of the jail told the BBC this was an embarrassing incident.

The prison authorities in Willich, near Duesseldorf, said the man, who was tall and broad-shouldered, had hidden in a box that was about 150cm by 120cm.

When the weekly express courier arrived to pick up several boxes of merchandise, the one containing the prisoner was also loaded into the back of the lorry.

Shortly after it had passed through the prison gates, the inmate made his dash for freedom by cutting a big hole in the tarpaulin of the lorry and jumping off.

The driver alerted the police after he noticed the tarpaulin flapping in the breeze.

Lying low

The jail’s chief warden, Beate Peters, said the man must have had accomplices outside the prison.

“As soon as the prisoner jumped off the back of the lorry his friends would have picked him up,” she told the BBC.

“We have no idea where the fugitive is hiding. We assume that he is still in the county and is lying low before making his move.”

Ms Peters said fellow convicts must also have known of his plan but that they would not talk because of a “code of honour” and because it is a criminal offence in Germany to help somebody escape from jail.

She said the incident showed that security needed to be beefed up urgently, something she had been lobbying for in the last few years.

“I was not surprised that an escape happened on my watch. For years I had been asking for more security guards from the government. But now they’ll have to listen.”
